FAQ
A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a licensed healthcare professional with advanced education and clinical training, qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and healthy weight management. In contrast, a Nutrition Coach focuses on general nutrition education, habit-building, and lifestyle changes but cannot diagnose or treat medical conditions. While both support clients in improving their health, RDs work within a clinical or therapeutic scope, whereas nutrition coaches emphasize guidance and accountability for wellness goals.
We don’t provide rigid meal plans because our goal is to empower you to make informed, healthy food choices that fit your lifestyle. By learning how to build balanced meals on your own, you gain the skills to maintain long-term success and flexibility in any situation.
During your 60 minute initial visit, we discuss all aspects of your lifestyle that contribute your overall health. This includes your day-day diet, as well as your social and medical history. We often visit your past diet attempts to see what worked and what didn’t. Generally in the first session, I do provide a modest amount education based on your underlying medical condition and/or goals. However, the majority of the session is dedicated to gathering the information I need to fully comprehend your current dietary issues, establish why they exist and how I can effectively work with you to resolve them. The aim is to set short-term and long-term goals based on your personal dietary needs to ensure we have a successful game plan. If your insurance will not cover your nutrition visit or you have a health insurance which Misty does not participate with – the cost of the initial 60-minute visit is $160.00 and each 30 –minute follow up visit is $80.00. Misty offers discounted packages for follow-up sessions depending on the number of sessions purchased.
At the end of our first visit, I will determine the projected frequency of your follow-up appointments. Follow-up visits are usually 30 minutes. While most people prefer to come in every 2-3 weeks, some patients come in weekly, and some come in every 2-3 months. It depends on your unique nutritional situation. Follow-up visits are used to review your progress, address your questions and any obstacles you are struggling with. Here are some examples of what might be covered in a 30-minute follow-up session: For a patient with high cholesterol, we may spend a session discussing ways to bump up the fiber in your diet. You might leave the session armed with a whole new set of high-fiber meals and snack ideas as well as a handout on the fiber content of various
foods. For someone with PCOS, we may use the session to learn how to correctly read a food label and identify nutrients to include in your diet as well as those to include. We also spend time discussing the impact of your medications on weight loss, fertility, and overall health. As time goes on, the sessions become more individualized, potentially adding exercise, sleep and stress management goals to the mix. Insurance often covers these visits and if they don’t I provide discounted rates based on the number of visits you purchase.
To find out for sure you will need to call to verify and confirm you do in fact have benefits on your insurance policy for nutritional counseling. Most policies cover it EVEN if you don’t have an actual diagnosis BUT still want to come in for nutrition counseling for prevention of a disease. Why not check to see if your insurance policy will cover the visits? Start by calling the 800 number on the back of your insurance card and ask to speak with a representative. Then set up a free information call and we can discuss the details. I am an in-network provider for most major health insurance companies in Texas.
Yes! Misty uses a HIPPA compliant telehealth system to connect with people around the USA (except Florida, Michigan & Iowa). Most insurances cover telehealth services. Therefore, when you schedule your visit you will be directed towards the next steps to setting up your telehealth session. However, it is possible your insurance plan may impose a cost-share for you to use this service. Please call your insurance company to confirm your telehealth coverage PRIOR to scheduling your visit.
In the event, your claim is denied for lack of nutrition coverage the initial visits with Misty (60-minutes) are $160.00 and each follow-up visit (30-minutes) is $80.00. RYS Nutrition accepts HSA/FSA cards and all major credit cards.
Please call your insurance company PRIOR to your visit to confirm coverage. I just don’t want you to have ANY surprise bills. Ask the questions listed below.
Do I have nutritional counseling coverage on my insurance plan?
● If the insurance company asks for a CPT code please provide them with the following codes 97802 & 97803. If they say you do not have coverage using those codes NEXT ask them to check your coverage for the following CPT codes: 99401, 99402, 99403 and 99404. We also can bill for S9470 if it is covered on your policy.
Will my diagnosis be covered?
● If the representative asks for a diagnosis code (aka ICD 10 code) – please tell them the visit is coded the ICD 10 code: Z71.3
● If they don’t accept Z71.3 then provide them with Z72.4 and see if they will cover that diagnosis instead.
● If you are overweight (E66.3), obese (E66.9), have pre-diabetes (R73.03), diabetes (E11.9), hypertension (I10), or high cholesterol (E78.0) you may want to see what your coverage is for these diagnoses as well.
● We always code your visit using preventative coding (if applicable) to maximize the number of visits you receive from your insurance carrier. However, if you ONLY have a medical diagnosis (for example: IBS, and you are not overweight or have CVD risk factors) your insurance may impose a cost-share for your visit either in the form of a deductible, co-pay or co insurance.
How many visits do I have per calendar year?
● Your carrier will let you know how many visits they are willing to cover. Depending on the carrier the number of visits vary from 0 to unlimited depending on medical need.
Do I have a cost-share for my nutrition visit?
● A cost-share is the amount you will need to pay as required by your particular insurance plan towards your services. A cost-share can be in the form of a deductible, co-pay or co-insurance.
● You will be billed under your insurance policy’s plan under your preventative benefits if your plan allows. With that being said, if you have preventative benefits there is often NO cost share for you associated with the visit. Be sure to check this before your visit.
● In the event you have a cost-share we will initially bill your insurance company directly. Once we receive the EOB describing your responsibility as the patient, we will bill the credit card on file for the amount noted under ‘patient responsibility.
● For most insurance companies, dietitians are considered a specialist. Therefore, your specialist co-pay is applicable and is payable at the time of service. This information is often apparent on the front of your actual insurance card. However, often because we bill your insurance with preventative counseling the co-pay is often not applicable.
● We generally wait for the claim to be processed to determine whether or not you have a co-pay and then charge the credit card you have on file with us the co-pay amount.
